 | Cougar Bay Nature Preserve Tour
ROW Adventures offers you two ways to explore Cougar Bay Nature Preserve. One is our kayak tour where you paddle among the marshy grasses and shallow waters of this rich ecosystem. The other is a custom walking tour for your small group. The 88-acre Cougar Bay Preserve is bordered by mountains of pine and fir that slope down to the lush meadows near Lake Coeur d'Alene. This is an important stopover for migrating waterfowl and a nesting site for numerous shorebirds. Redwing blackbirds, great blue herons, pelicans, white swans, egrets, buffleheads, mergansers and many other birds visit or live here. The log pilings from the logging days of old have become the perfect platform for nesting osprey which you'll see and if you're lucky, perhaps even a soaring bald eagle. Over 140 species have been identified. This is also home to beaver, muskrat, moose, otter, elk and deer. There are over five miles of trails to explore and we'll customize the tour length based on your interests.

You'll see the legendary Columbus tree and much more on this 3.3 mile walk that is suitable for people of all abilities. As you walk and explore this forested land, gaze over the beauty of Lake Coeur d'Alene in a view that remind many of the lakes of Switzerland. Our friendly naturalist guides will tell you about the fascinating natural and cultural history of this very special place. There's so much of interest here that Mineral Ridge was the first recreation site developed by the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho and trail construction started in 1963. It was designated a National Recreation Trail in 1982.
We gain about 700-feet elevation during the walk and we tailor the pace to your abilities. The point is not to rush, but rather to amble through the forest, breath the pine-scented air and take in the natural beauty all around you. You'll learn about ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. We'll bend over to examine ocean-spray, lichens and mosses. You'll see syringa (Idaho's state flower), thimble berry, oregon grape, nine-bark, wild rose and much more. Over 100 plant species have been identified on Mineral Ridge.
Mineral Ridge was named by miners looking to strike it rich. The first claims filed were the Buckeyeand Silver Wave, dating to 1891. In 1908 several got together and formed the Mineral Ridge Mining and Milling Company. Join us on this intriguing walk that promises to be a highlight of your visit to Coeur d'Alene.
