There are plenty of outdoor activities and fun to be found in the area including sailing, lake kayaking, white water rafting, biking, running and walking.  Also, the many camping and hiking opportunities in the Coeur d’Alene area prove to be unforgettable experiences time and time again.

Indeed Lake Coeur d’Alene is home to plenty of water sports, and if you’re looking to see it at leisurely pace consider taking a three-hour long kayak tour of the region.  The ROW Adventure Center offers morning, afternoon, and sunset kayaking tours that are ideal for families and beginners.  Kayaking Cougar Bay Preserve with ROW Adventures may give you the chance to spot some of the Coeur d’Alene’s most treasured wildlife.  Migrating and nesting waterfowl, numerous shorebirds, songbirds, moose, beaver, otter and deer all call Lake Coeur d’Alene home.

If you’re looking to pick up the pace, there is whitewater rafting, complete with class III rapids. There are routes available for all ages from May through September on the Spokane River.

The area is a fly fishers mecca with the beautiful Coeur d'Alene River just east of town less than an hour and the emerald St. Joe about two hours away.  Both feature excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, a native species that are famous around the world.  The ROW Adventure Center offers half day and full day fly fishing trips on these rivers as well as packages that combine them with overnight accommodations.

If you’d rather get dusty than wet then head over to the Rider Ranch for the true cowboy experience that include hayrides, horseback riding and some truly awesome mountain views.  Located just 8 miles east of Coeur d’Alene, Rider Ranch offers short day rides, evening dinner rides, activities for families at their barn, and also a has site for larger group gatherings such as weddings and family reunions.

The area is full of great bike trails the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes as well as the Spokane River Centennial Trail that runs from Coeur d'Alene to Spokane mostly following the Spokane River.  ROW Adventures offers daily biking tours of the Centennia Trail.  The Centennial Trail begins at the Idaho state line and ends at Nine Mile Falls, Washington.  The path of the Centennial Trail includes a metropolitan center section in the heart of downtown Spokane with more rural east and west endpoints.  Whether users are walking, running, skating, or biking, the Spokane River Centennial Trail offers the peace and quiet of nature, abundant wildlife, and the chance to enjoy gentle flow of the Spokane River.  One hour east is the amazing Hiawatha Trail with a bike path that goes through mile-long tunnels and over old railroad bridges.  The ROW Adventure Center would love to accommodate your trip on these amazing trails!

In the winter you’ll find what Ski Magazine has dubbed “Skiing’s Biggest Secrets,” with runs at the Silver Mountain in nearby Kellogg, Idaho.  This resort features more than 1,500 acres with more than 65 trails. There are seven lifts available, which run year long.  So when the summer returns you can come back and experience the trails on your mountain bike.  Silver Mountain’s 3 mile long scenic gondola makes for a more relaxing, beautiful, care-free experience.  Schweitzer Ski Area is just north of Coeur d'Alene which also is a wonderful and large area that transitions in the summer to a place with mountain bike and hiking trails.

Tubbs Hill is home of one of the area most popular hikes.  It's about a two-mile loop hike on a trail that follows the shoreline with some nice beaches along the way.   Also, there are trails that climb to the top of the hill for panoramic views of the area.  Coeur d'Alene is proud to have Tubbs Hill as part of its park system and hopes that you enjoy this unique park setting.

Northern Idaho has a rich history of gold mining.  The Crystal Gold Mine Museum of nearby Kellogg, Idaho offers guided underground tours and explanations of how miners dilled and tested for gold in the area.  This mine, only rediscovered in 1991, is the only authentic 1880s underground gold mine museum in the Northwest!  The underground mine tours are open all year with seasonal gold panning.

Be sure to take a stroll on the world's longest floating boardwalk, 3,300 feet long and 12 feet wide, featuring a swinging gate for sailboats and a bridge for powerboat entry on Lake Coeur d’Alene.
